Sin:

Characteristics:

Unintentional: Sin can be both intentional and unintentional.

Violation of God’s Law: It encompasses any act that goes against God’s commands or moral guidelines.

Examples: Lying, stealing, coveting, or any behavior contrary to God’s will.

Usage: In Christianity, sin is often associated with the concept of original sin inherited from Adam and Eve.

The Greek term “hamartia” captures the idea of falling short of the mark.

Transgression:

Definition: Transgression specifically refers to the intentional violation of a law, boundary, or prohibition. It implies crossing a line knowingly.

Characteristics:

Intentional: Transgressions are deliberate acts.

Formally Prohibited: They occur when something is formally forbidden, even if it is not inherently wrong.

Examples: Disobeying a specific commandment or breaking a rule.

Usage: In some religious contexts (e.g., Mormonism), transgression is distinct from sin. For instance, Adam and Eve are believed to have transgressed by partaking of the forbidden fruit, but they did not sin because they lacked knowledge of right and wrong before the Fall.

In summary, sin encompasses both intentional and unintentional wrongdoing, while transgression specifically refers to knowingly violating a prohibition or law. The distinction helps us understand the nature of our actions and the need for repentance and forgiveness.

Father, I would love to ask for complete perfection and that I would never sin again, but I know that would not be possible. Instead, teach me the ways of your Son Jesus Christ, reveal the hidden secrets of purity and righteous living.
