The Minister of Transport, Ms Barbara Creecy, and the Deputy Minister, Mr Mkhuleko Hlengwa, have expressed deep sadness following a major crash that claimed the lives of 10 people (9 males and 1 female), and left 3 injured on Thursday, 21 May 2026, in Mpumalanga.

According to the National Traffic Police, a Toyota minibus taxi and a bus collided head-on at approximately 05:15 on the R39 between Standerton and Morgenzon in Mpumalanga.

Creecy and Hlengwa have extended their condolences to the bereaved families and also expressed their wish for a speedy and full recovery to those injured.

They have also emphasised that it is important for motorists to take heed of the road safety messages.

Long-distance drivers are urged to take a break after every 200 km or after every 2 hours of driving.

This is due to a proven fact that fatigue is a silent killer.Creecy and Hlengwa have instructed the RTMC to investigate the cause of the crash and submit a preliminary report within 48 hours.
