Freeway hitchhikers arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper

On Friday, 20 March 2026, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) High-Speed Unit Officers, arrested two (2) male suspects aged forty-two (42) and forty-three (43), for possession of suspected stolen copper and contravention of the Immigration Act, in the Springs area.

While conducting a high-speed operation along the N17 freeway, Officers spotted two (2) male pedestrians hitchhiking. Officers approached the individuals with the intention of removing them from the freeway, as their presence posed a serious danger to motorists.

During the interaction, Officers observed that the suspects appeared nervous and repeatedly clenched their carry bags, raising suspicion. A search was subsequently conducted, leading to the discovery of three rolled copper cables in each suspect’s bag, along with various tools.
