The Bible is an anthology.
As followers of Christ, we grapple with the question of whether we should believe the whole Bible or just parts of it. It’s a significant issue that has divided Christians, and it’s essential to approach it thoughtfully.
The Bible is unlike any other book. It claims to be something far greater: the Word of God. Behind its human authors stands another author—God Himself. The Bible says, “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). If this is true (and as a Christian, I believe it is), then we aren’t free to pick and choose what parts of the Bible we will believe. The whole Bible is God’s Word, and it teaches us God’s truth. The Bible asserts, “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless” (2 Samuel 22:31).
However, understanding and interpreting the Bible can be complex due to its diversity. The Bible is an anthology—a collection of various genres, including historical writings, legal codes, poetry, biographies, prophetic writings, and apocalyptic literature. Some books are works of oral tradition written down long after the fact. Editors and translators spliced some books together or split them as they saw fit.
Apocalyptic literature, such as Daniel or Revelation, is deliberately confusing because it uses coded language and symbolism to convey its messages. These books were popular during times of great oppression, when writers needed to express themselves without censorship.
Moreover, while the books of the Bible are divinely inspired, they were penned by fallible people from different cultures who didn’t see the world as we do today. Recognizing this context helps us approach each book appropriately.
2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” Even the Old Testament contains valuable lessons for us today. For instance, consider the story of Gideon.
In summary, we should approach the entire Bible with reverence and humility. While some parts may be challenging to understand fully, we trust that God reveals truths through His Word to help us live life according to His perfect way.
